Five Years of Family Photos with Karissa, Logan & Emmy

Five years in a row with Karissa, Logan & Emmy, and that feels pretty special.

There is something so meaningful about photographing the same family year after year. As an Edmonton family photographer, one of my favourite parts of this job is getting to watch families grow and change while documenting those little pieces of life that might otherwise be forgotten.

This year was another beautiful family photography session with Karissa, Logan, Emmy and, of course, their pup Niko. We spent some time together enjoying the outdoors, capturing the connection between them and letting the session unfold naturally.

One of the things I love about this family is how they do things a little differently. They let Emmy choose her own outfit based completely on how she is feeling that day, and I think that is so much fun. It gives her the freedom to express her personality instead of feeling like she needs to fit into a perfectly coordinated family photography look.

I think that approach fits perfectly with the way I photograph families. I want kids to be themselves. I want to capture their personalities, the way they interact with their parents and those little moments that happen naturally when everyone is simply together.

Karissa and Logan have always put such a focus on how they feel as a family, and that comes through so beautifully in their photographs. Some of my favourite images are those sweet candid moments between the more traditional portraits. The hugs, the laughs, the little looks and all of those tiny interactions that show what their family is actually like.

And, of course, Niko has to be part of the photos every year! He is an important part of their family, even if I have to put a little extra love into Photoshop to brighten him up so he doesn’t just photograph as an adorable black blob with a tongue sticking out. Haha!

These are exactly the kinds of family photography sessions I love most. They aren’t about creating a picture-perfect version of a family. They are about documenting the people you love, exactly as you are right now.
