When you think about engagement photos, you probably picture mountains, rivers, or golden fields at sunset. But Kaylen & David had a different vision for their session — and I absolutely loved it.

They chose to meet Megan at The Meadows Community Recreation Centre in Edmonton for a skating engagement session that felt personal, playful, and completely unique to them.

Why The Meadows Rec Centre is Perfect for Winter Engagement Photos

Let’s be honest — Edmonton winters can be intense. When temperatures drop to -35 degrees, outdoor sessions can quickly become more about survival than romance. Choosing an indoor location like The Meadows Rec Centre allows couples to:

  • Stay warm and comfortable
  • Avoid windburn and red noses
  • Enjoy more relaxed, natural expressions
  • Capture something completely different from the typical outdoor session

The bright, open arena space gave us a clean, modern backdrop that kept the focus on Kaylen & David — their laughter, their connection, and the way they naturally moved together on the ice.

Skating Engagement Photos That Tell Your Story

One of my favourite things as a photographer is when couples choose a location that actually means something to them. Skating is something Kaylen & David enjoy together, so incorporating it into their engagement session made the photos feel authentic.

There’s something effortlessly romantic about gliding across the ice hand-in-hand. The movement adds energy, the rink lighting creates a cool winter vibe, and the candid moments in between become pure magic.

And honestly? It’s always a good thing when you can step inside and escape -35 degree weather.

Thinking Outside the Box for Your Edmonton Engagement Session

The Meadows Rec Centre might not be your typical “beautiful” engagement location — but that’s exactly why it worked. Engagement sessions don’t have to be in a field or forest to be meaningful. They just have to reflect you.

If you’re planning an engagement session in Edmonton and want something a little different — whether that’s skating, a favourite coffee shop, or somewhere that holds memories — lean into it. The most memorable engagement photos are the ones that tell your story.

Kaylen & David proved that even a hockey arena can feel romantic when you’re with the right person.
