Family Photos at Our Sherwood Park Acreage

Family Photos at Our Sherwood Park Acreage

There are some families you photograph who already know exactly what it feels like to be in front of your camera. And then there’s my sister, brother-in-law and their crew, who have probably had their faces photographed by me more times than they can count.

We decided to do some family photos at our acreage, which is hardly a new location for them. They are here all the time anyway, so it felt like the perfect place to document their family just as they are.

And honestly, we had everything going for us. The light was beautiful, the acreage was looking gorgeous, and we had some pretty cute kids to work with. So what could possibly go wrong?

Well, when you combine family, kids and a camera, there is always going to be a little bit of chaos. But that is also what makes these photos feel like them.

I love photographing families in places where they are actually comfortable. Instead of putting everyone somewhere unfamiliar and asking them to stand perfectly still, an acreage gives kids room to move, explore and be themselves. It creates opportunities for the genuine interactions, little laughs and in-between moments that make family photographs feel more meaningful.

And because these kids are my family, I know their personalities pretty well. That definitely makes it easier to let them be themselves and photograph all those little moments in between the posed photos.

The result is a gallery filled with beautiful light, big personalities, genuine connection and, of course, some seriously adorable kids.

I may be biased, but I think our acreage makes a pretty great backdrop for family photography.
