When Rain Creates the Magic: Kristina & Thomas’ Annual Family Photos

One of my favourite traditions each year is photographing Kristina & Thomas.

There’s an added layer to this tradition because Kristina is also a photographer, and every year we take turns photographing each other. I photograph her and Thomas, and then Kristina gets behind the camera and photographs me. I love that we’ve continued doing this year after year. It’s such a fun way to document our friendship, our families and how much life changes from one year to the next.

This year, we ended up with something a little different: rain.

And I am so glad we didn’t let the weather forecast stop us from meeting.

The Magic of Rainy Family Photos

I know that rain isn’t usually what people picture when they think about their family photography session. When you see rain in the forecast, the first instinct can be to reschedule and wait for a beautiful sunny evening.

But some of my favourite family photos happen when the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The clouds create soft, beautiful light. The rain adds movement and atmosphere. Everything feels a little quieter and more intimate. Instead of fighting the weather, we get to incorporate it into the photographs.

That’s exactly what happened with Kristina & Thomas.

The rain gave us these beautiful, atmospheric images that we simply wouldn’t have created on a perfectly sunny evening. They feel genuine and a little bit unexpected, which is exactly what I love about photography.

Why I Don’t Automatically Reschedule for Rain

When clients ask me whether we should reschedule because rain is in the forecast, my answer is usually: let’s wait and see.

Weather in Alberta can change quickly, and even if it does rain, that doesn’t necessarily mean we can’t have an amazing session.

Sometimes we get a few drops and then beautiful light. Sometimes we get dramatic clouds. Sometimes we get a full-on rainy session and embrace it completely.

The goal isn’t to create the exact same photos every time. It’s to create photographs that reflect what that particular evening actually felt like.

And sometimes, the imperfect weather creates the most memorable images.

Thank you, Kristina & Thomas, for always being so easy to photograph and for continuing this little tradition with me every year.

I love getting to see you both, create something beautiful together and then have Kristina return the favour and photograph me. It’s one of those traditions that I hope we keep for many years to come.

And this year’s rainy session was a pretty good reminder of why I love photographing families outdoors in every kind of weather.

You really never know where the magic is going to happen.
